I plan to have a very inviting and comfortable classroom. I believe that a positive classroom environment is a huge factor in student engagement and motivation. I set the desks up in a U-shape to lend for classroom discussions. I want my high school English classroom to be discussion-oriented. With this specific shape, all the students can see each other so that they can have great discussions and share ideas. That way, the classroom can become a collaboration of thoughts and a community where everyone’s voice can be heard.
An example of how this desk shape can impact the learning in my classroom would be a class debate. With the U-shape, I can easily split the students in half and have them discuss conflicting ideas in the novel we are reading. They then can come back together and argue their respective sides. Since they are already facing each other, the desks won’t have to be moved at all. This setup is great for classroom management because I will be able to have access to every desk and can easily circulate through the classroom. I could even leave small openings in the U to get around even more easily. Another great use for this classroom setup could be student presentations. I plan to do a lot of lessons that are student-centered, so the students can help teach each other. When they do presentations of their projects, they can stand in front of the class and no one will have to turn around to see.
Since I will be an English teacher, I need to have a bunch of bookshelves in my classroom. My dream classroom would have a reading nook with a couch, pillows and beanbags surrounded by bookcases for students to go and relax. Making books available to students is very important to me so I want to have almost a library of different types of books that students could borrow from me. The reading nook can be used for reading, but can also be used if students need a break from a stressful situation, or can even do class work there if they are behaving.
This classroom setup is optimal for student discussion and presentations. I would allow the students to take learning into their own hands, but still be the facilitator in the classroom. In addition, I would frequently change the seating chart so that the students are able to work with different types of people throughout the year. My ideal classroom will create a close-knit community where everyone is respected and comfortable enough to share their thoughts.
